An external ear infection (swimmer’s ear) usually causes pain when the ear is tugged or when pressing on the tragus. It may also cause itching and discharge. A middle ear infection may come with symptoms like ear pain, hearing loss, and possibly fever or drainage if the eardrum ruptures.
